Local SEO

Local SEO for Maine Small Businesses

Local SEO helps nearby customers find your business when they search for what you do, whether they're using Google Search, Google Maps, or an AI tool like ChatGPT. I help Maine small businesses improve their websites and online information so they're easier to find and easier to trust. Start with a one-time project, or add monthly services if they make sense for you.

Ways to work together

Start with the foundations. Add more when it makes sense.

Every business starts from a different place. Many begin with the one-time project. If your website is already in good shape, you can go straight to monthly improvements.

An example

What does SEO improvement actually look like?

Picture a painting contractor in Maine. Their website lists "interior painting" and "exterior painting," with a sentence or two about each. The work is great, but the website doesn't say much.

Meanwhile, homeowners are searching questions like:

  • How much does exterior painting cost in Maine?
  • When is the best time to paint a house in New England?
  • How do I know if my siding needs repainting?

I'd likely recommend expanding the exterior painting page to answer those questions: what affects the price, how Maine's short painting season shapes scheduling, what the company's process looks like from prep to cleanup, and a few common customer questions.

I'd also check the less visible pieces. Are related pages linked together? Can Google crawl and index the page? Do the business name, services, and service area match across the website and Google Business Profile?

None of that is keyword stuffing. It's making the page more useful to the homeowner, which also makes it easier for search engines and AI tools to understand what the business does.

Getting found in Google is changing. Your marketing should keep up.

More people are turning to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and other AI-powered tools to research local services. Instead of typing "painter near me," someone might ask, "Who's a reliable exterior painter near Brunswick, Maine, and what should I expect to pay?" These tools pull together information from websites and other online sources to answer questions like that.

You may have heard terms like AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). They describe ways to improve how a business shows up in AI-generated answers, and in practice they overlap heavily with traditional SEO. Google says its usual SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews, with no special markup required.

So my approach to AI search optimization builds on solid local SEO:

  • Researching the questions customers ask before they hire
  • Making service pages clearer and more detailed
  • Adding helpful customer Q&As where they fit
  • Including real, firsthand knowledge and examples from your business
  • Improving internal links between related pages
  • Checking that important content can be crawled and indexed
  • Reviewing how your services and locations appear on your website and key business listings

The goal is to make your business easier for people and search systems to find, understand, and verify. No one can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation, a spot in a Google AI Overview, or a specific ranking, but these fundamentals give the right customers a better chance of finding you.

Questions, answered

Common questions about local SEO.

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT search results?

There's no guaranteed way to get your business recommended in ChatGPT search results. Making your website accessible to search crawlers, clearly describing your services, and keeping your information accurate across relevant online sources are useful starting points.

One technical detail matters: OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. As part of my SEO work, I check that your site allows it, help make your service pages clearer, and review your key business listings for consistency.

Can my business appear in Google's AI Overviews?

Yes, if your page is indexed by Google and eligible to appear in search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra technical requirements or special markup for AI Overviews.

What helps is genuinely useful content. A contractor's page that explains when basement waterproofing is needed and what affects the cost gives Google more to work with than a one-line service listing. Inclusion is never guaranteed.

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews and business listings when recommending local companies?

OpenAI doesn't publish exactly which reviews or listings ChatGPT relies on for local recommendations. AI tools can draw on many public sources, which may include websites, directories, and review sites.

That's why I look beyond your website. Accurate business details and genuine reviews help customers, and search tools, confirm who you are. No particular number of reviews or single listing guarantees a recommendation.

Is SEO still worth investing in now that people use AI to search?

Yes. Google says the same SEO fundamentals still apply to its AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.

A useful website, clear service pages, and accurate business information matter whether someone searches the traditional way or asks an AI tool. My approach strengthens those foundations with both in mind.

What's the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO improves your visibility in search engines like Google. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focus on how your information shows up in direct answers and AI-generated responses.

The three overlap a lot. Clear answers, useful content, and an accessible website help with all of them, which is why I include AI search practices in my SEO work instead of selling them as separate packages.

How much does local SEO cost for a small business in Maine?

It depends on your website's current condition and what it needs. My one-time SEO & AI Search Optimization project starts at $650, with a fixed quote before work begins. Monthly SEO Content & Improvements is $250/month. For your Google Business Profile, one-time setup and optimization starts at $300, and monthly management is $150/month.

Not every small business needs an expensive monthly SEO contract. Often a focused project is the most practical place to start, and you can decide about monthly help later.

Do I need the one-time project before monthly content?

Not always. If your website already explains your services clearly and doesn't have major technical problems, we can start with the monthly service. If it needs foundation work first, I'll tell you before you spend money on monthly work.

How long until I see results?

Meaningful ranking changes often take several months. Fixing obvious problems can help sooner, but results depend on your market, your competition, and where your website starts. I'll keep you posted on what I'm seeing along the way.

Can you guarantee I'll rank #1 or show up in AI answers?

No, and be wary of anyone who promises that. Google and AI tools decide what to show. What I can promise is careful, honest work that makes your business easier to find and easier to trust, without shortcuts that could get you penalized.
